🌿 Pruning for Growth: What My Garden Taught Me About Relationships

By FaYah

“Every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit.” — John 15:2 (KJV)

Sometimes the Greatest Lessons Don’t Come from a Classroom…

They come from your own backyard.

This morning, I spent several hours pruning bushes that I hadn’t touched in nearly four years.

As I looked around, I realized how overgrown everything had become. At first glance, the bushes appeared full and healthy. But once I got closer, I saw dead branches hidden beneath the surface, limbs growing in the wrong direction, tangled stems competing for space, and areas where sunlight could no longer reach.

As I carefully removed what no longer belonged, I realized I wasn’t just tending to my garden.

ABBA was tending to my heart.

“Sometimes what appears full isn’t always healthy. Years of neglected growth can hide what needs attention.”

Relationships Need Pruning Too

It made me wonder how many of our relationships look healthy on the outside while quietly carrying things that are draining the life from them.

Not every relationship needs to end.

Sometimes it simply needs pruning.

We all accumulate things that were never meant to remain.

  • Unspoken hurts
  • Poor communication
  • Pride
  • Fear
  • Bitterness
  • Unforgiveness
  • Unrealistic expectations
  • Emotional distance
  • Old habits that no longer serve us

Left unattended, they slowly consume the space where love, trust, and peace are meant to grow.

Pruning Is Not Punishment

One thing became very clear to me today…

A gardener doesn’t prune because they dislike the plant.

They prune because they love it.

They can already see what it is capable of becoming.

Healthy pruning removes what steals life so new growth has room to flourish.

Isn’t that exactly how love works?

Sometimes love requires difficult conversations.

Sometimes it requires forgiveness.

Sometimes it requires accountability.

Sometimes it requires healthy boundaries.

And sometimes…

It requires us to cut away the very things we’ve become comfortable holding onto.

Not because we’re giving up.

But because we’re believing for something better.

“Pruning may leave things looking smaller for a season, but it creates space for healthier, stronger, and more beautiful growth.”

Growth Can Feel Uncomfortable

I’ll be honest…

There were moments this morning when I questioned whether I had cut away too much.

Would the bushes recover?

Would they fill back in?

Would they be more beautiful than before?

Then I realized…

Those are the very same questions we ask during difficult seasons in relationships.

Healing often feels uncomfortable.

Change can feel like loss.

Growth can leave us exposed.

Yet if the roots are healthy and both hearts are willing to do the work, new growth almost always follows.

Sometimes what looks like less today becomes so much more tomorrow.

What Are You Holding Onto?

Healthy relationships aren’t built by holding onto everything.

They’re built by having the wisdom to know what no longer belongs.

Maybe today isn’t about walking away from someone.

Maybe it’s about walking away from pride.

From resentment.

From harsh words.

From assumptions.

From silence.

From the habits that have quietly crowded out love.

Sometimes the healthiest thing we can do is lovingly prune what is preventing growth.

A Garden Worth Growing

As I stood back and admired my freshly pruned bushes, I smiled.

Not because they looked perfect.

But because they had been prepared for what comes next.

Growth.

The same is true for us.

ABBA doesn’t prune us to make us weaker.

He prunes us so we can become healthier.

Stronger.

More fruitful.

More like Him.

Perhaps the relationships worth keeping aren’t the ones that never require pruning.

Perhaps they’re the ones where both people are willing to grow.

🌿 Reflection

What in your life or relationships needs pruning today so that something healthier can grow tomorrow?

I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments.
